Jitters opened for business in 1994. Owners Dennis and Linda Johnson with their two daughters, Briana and Shanda are the family behind the scenes. The Johnsons have lived in Eagle River for over 35 years, raising kids, teaching school, operating a river rafting business at one time, running an art gallery/gift shop, and enjoying the beauty Alaska has to offer. Their extended family reaches far into the community. Many customers now remember Dennis as their 6th grade teacher. Kobuk Coffee Co
Housed in The Kimball Building, one of the first commercial buildings in Anchorage, The Kobuk has become a “must: stop for four generations of Alaskans. Built in 1915 as home to Irvin Kimball’s family and a general store supplying the necessities of frontier life, the wood frame building survived the Great Quake of 1964. By 1965, Irvin’s daughter, Decema Kimball, was running the store and sublet a third of the building to her good friend Patsy James. James started Goldpan Gifts and later added the name “Kobuk Coffee Co” when she turned her specialty to fresh roasted coffee beans, tea and porcelain. The Bonito family purchased the Kobuk business in 1993 and began an 18-year business relationship with Mrs. Kimball, eventually purchasing the building from her heirs in 2002.

Black Cup
Cafe del Mundo began in 1975 in Anchorage, Alaska by founder Perry Merkel. Perry was inspired to bring specialty coffee to the Last Frontier after his travels through Central America. Perry began humbly roasting coffee on a small air roaster in a shed behind his home. Slowly he built relationships with restaurants, grocery stores, and home coffee enthusiasts throughout the state. Once Alaska got a taste of fresh roasted coffee and espresso business exploded with Cafe Del Mundo eventually evolving into multiple cafe locations. After a long, illustrious career Perry Merkel decided it was time to retire and sold his business to his friends Brad Bigelow and Tim Gravel of Kaladi Brothers Coffee. It was important for the soul of Cafe del Mundo to remain, but it was time for a brand update. The idea for Black Cup – Extraordinary Coffee Best Served Black was born. Black Cup’s mission is more emphasis on farm to cup transparency, roasting to promote origin characteristics, coffee education, and delivering some of the world’s finest coffees to Alaskans.

All of this agriculture is accomplished by skilled artisans using a lifetime, often several lifetimes, of experience. We believe that these nuances receive their best chance to shine when they are offered in coffee roasted light to medium by, yet another, skilled artisan. This comparably light roasting allows the fruitiness of our beans to shine. While it’s true that even the worst of beans can be roasted dark enough to give a bold, “roasty” flavor, only the best of beans possess the inherent depth to shine in more controlled roasting. This delivers the true flavor of the coffee and our friends at Black Cup Coffee truly excel in this area. The final group of artisans, our professionally trained baristas, offer the very best in coffee house experiences.
Our Coffee standards are set by the classic definition of words like “Cappuccino” and “Latte.” This leads to a few minor differences in our shop. First, we offer Lattes and Cappuccinos in 12 and 16 ounces, classically the proportions of steamed milk and coffee work best in theses sizes. Second, we steam our milk to 140 degrees as hotter milk produces a scalded taste that pairs poorly with coffee. Third, we offer lots of unique and interesting ways to brew your favorite coffee. Sound pretentious? We hope not and we won’t treat you pretentiously, we promise. We want to serve great coffee – that means coffee you like. Like your milk screaming hot? Captain’s Coffee was founded by Ty Gates in 1995 in Homer, Alaska. Starting with a small 2 man operation and a hand built drum roaster, Ty set out on his quest to provide the community of Homer with fresh roasted coffees from around the world.
Now years later, Ty has grown his operation and has had many customers call him requesting his coffees, because they just can’t find the quality anywhere else!
He believes in the art of roasting and uses a 12 kilo San Franciscan drum roaster. His operation has expanded and he is committed to the goal of producing fresh, quality coffee.
As his knowledge of the industry developed, Ty focused primarily on purchasing shade grown, organic and fair trade coffees. By sponsoring estate farms, and becoming part of the Audubon Societies “Bird Friendly” program he continues to contribute to good earth practices.
